2017 School Maker Faire:

Innovation, creativity, and technology made available to an exceptional flow of young kids, teens and adults marked the success of the third edition of the MindAfrica School Maker Faire. The organization’s biggest innovation faire of the year, promoted S.T.E.A.M learning through the maker movement to all in attendance.

More than 300 student and adult makers graced the event. Enthusiastic adults thronged to the stands and visited the 17 inventions presented by makers from 17 different schools in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. The event attracted not only schools and their students but engineers, architects, families and industry professionals as well.

Highlights from students project exhibitions included a battery powered lawn mower by students from State Primary School Elekahia which emerged 1st place in the primary category, an electromagnetic miniature turbine by students from De-Harry International School which came 1st in the Junior category and a plastic to hydro-carbon fuel converter by Arch Deacon Brown Educational Center which came out 1st in the senior category. Other projects exhibited by students included a thermo-electric refrigerator by Dietams International College, home grain purifyer machine by Federal Government Girls College Abuloma, Domestic Mixer by Community Secondary School Oginigba, electrical generation from salt water by Government Girls Secondary School Rumukwuta and many other projects from 17 schools.

Students also participated in hands-on workshops, demos & exhibition booths, learning directly from Adult Makers themselves. Workshop activities featured DIY robotics sessions, 3-D printing, coding, Arduino programming and Learn to solder. However, it didn’t exclude the arts! Traditional crafts, such as textile hack, visual art reproduction, and tinkering & reuse of waste items such as plastic bottles were also included.

The success of the 2017 MindAfrica School Maker Faire would not have been possible without the valuable collaboration of our facilitators, mentors and the support of the event’s sponsors Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo)

2016 School Maker Faire:

The Second edition of MindAfrica’s School Maker Faire was held in Port Harcourt on the 5th of November, 2016 and hosted 19 Maker clubs from primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools in Rivers State. A total of 381 persons were in attendance at the event comprising 271 student makers, adult mentors, school heads and guests.

As is characteristic of the MindAfrica School Maker Faire, there was an exhibition of innovative projects developed by maker clubs as solutions to important problems in their communities. The students also participated in DIY hands-on workshops in various STEAM fields including 3D design and printing, robotics, creative reuse, textile hack, and a lot more. Prizes were awarded to school clubs with distinctive and outstanding projects judged to be the most innovative in their categories and the winners were:

1st Place winner, Junior Category : State Primary School, Elekahia

1st Place winner, Intermediate Category : Community Secondary School, Rumuomasi

1st Place winner, Senior Category : Community Secondary School, Igwuruta
